Over the past few decades, Western medicine has come to acknowledge the efficacy of many Eastern healing modalities, including acupuncture and medicinal herbalism. Veterinary medicine is no exception to the rule, and we are now more familiar with the science of some of these ancient practices.
Pet acupuncture or veterinary acupuncture is growing in popularity for its non-invasive approach to pain management and the successful treatment of many common pet illnesses, and is a treatment modality we are proud to offer at Billings Animal Family Hospital. Here is a look at why…
What is Pet Acupuncture?
Essentially, veterinary acupuncture works in the same way as acupuncture for humans. A series of very small needles are applied to specific points of the body to stimulate a healing response. Through this, the nervous system of the body is engaged and will respond by triggering the release of neurotransmitters and hormones that help ease pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.
Pet Health Conditions Helped by Acupuncture
Veterinary acupuncture is in a promising phase, as more knowledge is gained into its varied benefits – particularly, in cases of chronic pain or degenerative diseases. As we learn more about this treatment modality, organizations are being formed to oversee the continued development of the practice of pet acupuncture, as well as developing practice guidelines and continuing education coursework for interested veterinarians.
But, veterinary acupuncture isn’t just for pain management! Here are some of the conditions being treating through acupuncture:
What Does a Pet Acupuncture Treatment Session Involve?
Before we begin applying SMART sessions or Scientific Medical Acupuncture and Related Techniques, your pet will have a thorough examination to diagnose and assess the conditions or diseases present that will be treated. We view acupuncture as a complementary modality – most effective when used in conjunction with surgery, medication, laser therapy, and other options to create the best possible treatment plan for your pet.
Each acupuncture session last approximately 40-70 minutes, depending on the needs of your pet. The number of sessions needed is also determined by your pet’s response to treatment and the condition being treated. Many pets respond in as few as four treatments.
While many pet parents wonder about how a pet might respond to the needles, most pets are relaxed throughout the procedure. This is due in part to the delicacy of the acupuncture needles, which are not easily detectable or felt. Our SMART specialists are skilled in creating a calm and gentle experience for our pet patients – many even come to enjoy their sessions!
We hope you are as excited about this wonderful, noninvasive approach to treating common diseases and conditions. We’d love to answer any questions you might have about how veterinary acupuncture can improve the quality of life of your pet. Give us a call!
