As the big day draws near, you may be wondering what to get your pet for Christmas. And while Fluffy or Fido may enjoy a new toy or collar, it is almost certain that what he or she would appreciate the most this holiday season is spending time with you and your family.

Even though we advise leaving your pet at home for most Christmas parties and daylong shopping trips, there is plenty of pet-friendly holiday fun to be had with your dog or cat this Christmas. Here are a few ideas…

snowdayDog Activities

Finding time to send with your canine companion doesn’t have to be difficult, as long as you prep your pup for the activity at hand.

If you and yours are off to see the holiday lights, pack up your dog and bring him or her along for the special ride. Just be certain that he or she has a safe space to ride and a warm blanket to lie on should you stop for cocoa along the way.

If you haven’t gotten your tree yet, and are planning on hunting your own in the mountains, consider taking your dog along as well; as long as he or she is built to handle the hike and the snow. You will want to be certain to pack food, water, and blanket for your pup, but this is the kind of holiday activity most dogs thrive on.

Likewise, if you are planning on sledding, skiing, or doing anything outdoors this holiday there is no reason he or she shouldn’t come along; as long as you’re prepared to meet your pet’s needs. Again, food and water are important, as is a warm, dry place to lie down when it’s time to rest.

And, of course, just curling up with your dog for a long winter’s nap is always something he or she will love.

Cat Activities

Christmas can easily be the cat’s meow if you spend a little time giving your kitty some extra love and attention.

Make room for your feline to curl up with you on the couch when you snuggle up for your favorite holiday movie. Or, break out the laser pointer if your kitty is in the mood to frisk rather than cuddle.

You can also create some special cat time as you’re wrapping and unwrapping gifts. Make your pet gift-wrap balls to paw at, shoot rubber bands across the room for your cat to chase, and make a ribbon cat toy to keep your kitty amused while you do your thing. Just be certain that these items aren’t swallowed, or you may have a problem.

Something for Everyone

Another fun holiday tradition to share with your pets is the holiday baking. Before you start in on your cookies and sweets, bake a batch of pet treats. Not only will your pets love them, but having pet-only treats on hand will help reduce the temptations of sharing people foods with your cat or dog.

Whatever fun you share with your friends and family this Christmas, be certain to share your time with your pets as well. For them, time, love, and affection is what will make this the best Christmas ever.
